چکیده

Footprints are data structures that specify the positions, orientations, and timing information for the feet of articulated figures. This thesis studies the use of footprints to generate animations of legged animals. After introducing several met hods to generate footprints, we develop an algorithm t hat synt hesizes realistic motions of animals from footprints only. Our method employs a hybrid physically-based/kinematic approach. We first perform a trajectory optimization on an underlying approximation of the animal, in order to determine its overall motion. Soft physical and kinematic constraints employed in the optimization functional ensure that the trajectory's motion is both physically plausible and visually pleasing. By utilizing the optimized trajectory information, the footprint positions, and a variety of animation techniques, we reconstruct the motion of the animal. Our results show that various motions can be synthesized with this approach, including walking, galloping, jumping, pushups, and skating motions. Finallÿ, we summarize our contributions and discuss future directions. I would like to thank my supervisor, Michiel van de Panne, for his excellent supervision and guidance. He developed the underlying concepts on which this work was based, and inspired my creativity with his great brain storming sessions. Thanks, Michiel! Eugene Fiume, who enthusiastically read over my thesis, helped me look at my work from a different perspective, and gave me some ideas to speed up my animation routines. My friend and fellow Mater's student, Ivan Neulander, for allowing me to use his paintstroke rendering system to display my animated creature in ail its hairy glory. The paintstroke primitive in that system made it easy for me to generate images, and the A-buffer implementation in the renderer kept the images crisp and anti-aliased. My friends at DGP and DCS. You have al1 made my experience as a graduate student unforget t able. Thanks for distracting me from the pressures of research. Finaliy, 1 would like to thank my parents, George and Freda, and my brother, Jim. Without their encouragement and support, 1 would not have gotten as far as 1 have in my education and persona1 development. 1 want them to know that 1 appreciate al1 they have ever done for me.

Adopting Procedural Animation Technology to Generate Locomotion of Quadruped Characters in Dynamic Environments

A procedural-animation-based approach which rapidly synthesize the adaptive locomotion for quadruped characters that they can walk or run in any directions on an uneven terrain within a dynamic environment was proposed. We devise practical motion models of the quadruped animals for adapting to a varied terrain in a real-time manner. While synthesizing locomotion, we choose the corresponding mot...

Dynamics modeling and stable gait planning of a quadruped robot in walking over uneven terrains

Quadruped robots have unique capabilities for motion over uneven natural environments. This article presents a stable gait for a quadruped robot in such motions and discusses the inverse-dynamics control scheme to follow the planned gait. First, an explicit dynamics model will be developed using a novel constraint elimination method for an 18-DOF quadruped robot. Thereafter, an inverse-dynamics...

Development of a Piezoelectrically-Actuated Mesoscale Robot Quadruped

This paper describes a minimalist mobile robot design approach that offers a high locomotive efficiency, and is therefore well suited to mesoscale robot design. The authors have incorporated this approach into the development of a dynamically controlled piezoelectrically actuated mesoscale robot quadruped. The design described utilizes a lightly damped skeletal structure that generates locomoti...

Quadruped Animation

Films like Shrek, Madagascar, The Chronicles of Narnia and Charlotte’s web all have something in common: realistic quadruped animations. While the animation of animals has been popular for a long time, the technical challenges associated with creating highly realistic, computer generated creatures have been receiving increasing attention recently. The entertainment, education and medical indust...

Motion Doodles for Quadrupeds: How to Draw and Animate a Cat in 15 Seconds CPSC 533b Course Project Report

This paper presents a technology that enables an untrained user to draw and animate a quadruped in tens of seconds. The system recognizes a quadruped drawn by a user and creates a skeleton from the sketch. Following a few simple rules the user is able to draw the movement she wants the quadruped to do. The system will parse the sketch and interpret it to let the quadruped walk, jump, trot, gall...
